An exciting new workshop by the Old Operating Theatre Museum.

We are thrilled to be running a children’s creative writing workshop, led by children’s author Elizabeth C. Waight. Using the evocative surroundings of the museum and its objects, we’ll explore the key elements of fiction writing – setting, character and plot. Aimed at 8-12 year olds, but with visual resources for younger children, the workshop will last approximately one hour. After the workshop there will be an opportunity to explore the museum with a dedicated staff member, and take part in pomander and pill making, as well as handling some of our weird and wonderful collection.

£12 per child

Free online tickets for adults must be booked alongside the child (max 2 adults per child). There is an on-the-day 20% discount on all shop items for all participants. Timings below are for the writing workshop, with time to look around the museum after. Spaces limited to 15 children per session.

1st session: 10:00am – 11:00am Book here

2nd session: 11.30am – 12:30am Book here

Workshop activities, including writing prompts with real museum objects, cater to various learning styles and interests, while reinforcing key literacy skills like vocabulary development, sentence structure, and creative thinking. We’ll explore how to plot our stories, what makes an engaging setting, and how to write characters that leap off the page.

Young writers will leave with bags of inspiration and have exclusive access to a follow up writing competition, judged by Elizabeth. The winner will receive a signed copy of her book, The Unfortunate Archibald Marble.

About Elizabeth C. Waight

Elizabeth C. Waight is a Londoner currently battling for sofa space with her grumpy cat Ziggy. Her jobs have ranged from door-to-door saleswoman to shark chaser, but her passion has always been for telling stories. Her chilling children’s mystery for 9-12yr olds, The Unfortunate Archibald Marble, made its debut from boutique US publisher, Bollweevil Press.

Elizabeth began writing The Unfortunate Archibald Marble after spending many childhood summers visiting the wonderfully cluttered old farmhouse of her eccentric relations, and where one day her dad thought it’d be funny to throw a manky fox fur stole at her from an upstairs balcony. A spark was lit, and a story began.

Elizabeth is currently working on a new magical mystery, Blood Song, featuring the Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garret!
