What is Marchlands?

In mediaeval terms, marchlands are the lands comprising the borders of a territory. Over time such borderlands have taken on a folkloric power, representing the magical spaces between, where we can connect with different ways of seeing and being.

Hello, I’m Lizzie Waight, a photojournalist, fiction writer and wedding celebrant. On the surface these may seem like disparate things, but delve a little deeper. Just like the golden threads that weave through the Map of Many Places in my new book, Blood Song, all my work is connected by the same common thread; that of liminality and the evocation of unseen things.

There is no set way to navigate this website. Look, read, watch and explore. Bathe in the river that flows between worlds; glimpse what lies beyond the marchland, stepping into new truths, new lands. If you’d like to collaborate or commission, or just ask a question, get in touch. I’d love to hear from you.

I have always gravitated towards liminal spaces; swimming in rivers, and seeking out abandoned buildings and ancient forests. But these magical places are not only external; they exist within us too. Our lives pass through many liminal spaces, where we can learn, change and grow. Marchlands explores and celebrates all that glimmers in that magical space at the edges of the everyday.

Photography

While photography best describes the surface of the world, it is also an excellent tool for exploration. And when photography meets with other disciplines at its edges; be that film, text or any other art form; it creates something more viable and intriguing. Here, a perceptive space is created, allowing us to explore what lies beneath the visible landscape and experience the world in new and imaginative ways.

With an MA in Photojournalism, my work has been exhibited in museums and galleries both in the UK and internationally. Utilising both film and digital formats, I can create bespoke pieces tailored for homes, hotels, and workspaces.

Fiction

It can be hard to own your difference, especially for children. My books enable readers to navigate that sense of dislocation by connecting them with characters who must learn to let their blood sing with the stories of who they really are; all within the borderless world of magic.

After six years of running creative writing workshops for adults, I have developed school workshops for Years 4-7. Here, we look thematically at writing techniques, using atmosphere and sensory detail to convey truth and meaning.

What does marriage truly mean to you? This day is all about celebrating your unique relationship, so set aside outside expectations. Think about what kind of ceremony would authentically reflect who you are as individuals and as a couple. From this understanding, we’ll craft a personalised ceremony, where every element is thoughtfully chosen to honour and celebrate your love and commitment.

During a wedding, the ceremony becomes a liminal space—a sacred moment where you transition from one relationship to a new state of being.
